Before coming to the Centre, Mercy and her half-brother, Brian, were sent to beg for money, which their alcoholic mother used to buy the home-grown bush brew. Local church elders brought the children to the Centre. Brian was already drawn to street life and did not stay.
Following local tradition, Mercy was named after a significant place or person. The local hospital, Mercy Hospital, has many namesakes in the area.
Mercy is about 11 years old, loves school and likes to play hide and seek. Her best friend? It would be hard for her to pick just one. She is well-loved by all the children and adults at the Centre. Mercy has had a difficult life but is a sweet child who loves pink, braiding hair and helping in the kitchen. Mercy needs sponsors for education, food and housing ($500/year).
